Further information

For information about individual programmes in the Trusts within the school select the 'jobs' option from the menu or click here.  All programmes for F1 include 4 months surgery, 4 months medicine, and 4 months of another specialty. Academic programmes will include a dedicated four months in F2 attached to a specific academic team allied to the Hull York Medical School (HYMS).

There are nine posts altogether: each meets the clinical components required for Foundation Training, and provides a different opportunity for academic development in F2.

In each programme, the academic F2 will work with the team to deliver their current research programme. The successful applicants will be encouraged to take responsibility for a specific output of their own which fits into the overall research programme. Intended goals are a publication and presentations. Arrangements are made for all the HYMS academic F2s to attend the Introduction to Research Methodology course at the Department of Health Sciences, University of York, and to sit the exam.

F2 academic outline

Mental Health (based in Scarborough)

The Department of Health Sciences is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in health science research, and hosts the York Trials Unit.  It forms part of the Alcuin Collaboration, which includes the Centre for Health Economics and the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination.  Opportunities will be made available to join active research groups in areas of epidemiology, evidence based decision making and clinical trials.  The principle focus of the academic experience will be in Mental Health Services Research and primary care.  A lively portfolio of research projects are available – including MRC-funded trials of depression management; psychological aspects of ill health; primary care mental health and the chance to conduct and publish a Cochrane Review within one of the Cochrane Groups active in the department.  Trainees will be encouraged to develop research ideas throughout their F2 year and to conduct a high quality piece of research, suitable for publication, during their four month placement.

This post will be of interest to those considering a career in a broad range of specialities (including mental health, primary care and palliative medicine) but would also be valuable to those interested in health services research, psychological aspects of ill health and evidence based decision making in any specialty.
