Mental Health F2 academic outline

An opportunity to work in an internationally renowned department with suitability and relevance for a range of possible career paths, not just mental health.

Detail

The F1 year is spent in York, and the F2 year spent in Scarborough for the clinical posts and in HYMS at York University for the academic four months.

Professor Simon Gilbody

The Department of Health Sciences is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in health science research, and hosts the York Trials Unit.  It forms part of the Alcuin Collaboration, which includes the Centre for Health Economics and the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination.  Opportunities will be made available to join active research groups in areas of epidemiology, evidence based decision making and clinical trials.

The principle focus of the academic experience will be in Mental Health Services Research and primary care.  A lively portfolio of research projects are available including MRC-funded trials of depression management; psychological aspects of ill health; primary care mental health and the chance to conduct and publish a Cochrane Review within one of the Cochrane Groups active in the department.  Trainees will be encouraged to develop research ideas throughout their F2 year and to conduct a high quality piece of research, suitable for publication, during their four months.

This post will be of interest to those considering a career in a broad range of specialties including:

  • mental health
  • primary care
  • palliative medicine

but would also be valuable to those interested in any specialty in relation to:

  • health services research,
  • psychological aspects of ill health and
  • evidence based decision making
