HYMS

HYMS is one of the newest medical schools in the UK, producing over 130 graduates each year. HYMS has established a reputation for its Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to undergraduate medical education.

All F2 academic medical education trainees in NYECFS will be enrolled on the HYMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education in the postgraduate degrees department based at Hull University (subject to availability).  Trainees engaged in clinical posts are released from duties for the face to face days of this course.

Medical Education F2 academic programme

These posts will be of interest to those seeking to develop their educational skills with opportunities to be involved not only in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, but also scholarly study and research, audit and evaluation.

Details

The programme is based in Scunthorpe for the F1 year and in Hull during the F2 year.  The academic four months is with the HYMS Medical Education Team based at Hull University.

These programmes are designed to provide good opportunity to obtain the clinical curriculum competencies for the foundation programme whilst also enhancing skills in academic medical education.  Applicants will need to be highly self motivated and good at managing the competing pressures of clinical work and academic study.

 

Applicants are expected to register and complete the HYMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) course during the F2 year (currently commencing in January each year).

Outline job description

The Medical Education post will vary between the three four month periods, but opportunities could include:

  • Teaching:
    Design and delivery of teaching of skills and knowledge based content
    Clinical Skills (‘lab’ and ward based),
    Communications Master classes,
    F1 lunchtime teaching
    Revision sessions for Undergraduate Students
  • Assessment:
    Undergraduate Exams (opportunity exist to access the full range of examination processes including question writing, OSCE writing, marking etc.),
  • Evaluation:
    of an aspect of the Undergraduate course,
  • Research:
    HYMS has a number of educationally based research projects, and appointees will be encouraged to join this research.

All appointees will be supported on the PGCME course by a Tutor.  All appointees will be expected to keep a reflective diary and to meet with their Academic Supervisor at least monthly (an element of the PGCME course).

Each appointee will be encouraged to produce a potentially publishable piece of work on a subject of interest to them (provided it can be supported), aimed at the medical education journals.  Poster presentation or oral presentation at relevant conferences is also encouraged.  An opportunity to present or facilitate at the annual HYMS Educational Conference at Bishop Burton may be available.
