foundation training?

• foundation training is a two year generic programme that provides the first work following graduation from medical school, prior to taking up specialty training
• it was introduced in the UK in 2005 to replace the Pre-Registration House Officer (PRHO) year, and provide a more generic first year at Senior House Officer (SHO) level
• the first year (F1) is designed to achieve competencies set out in the curriculum, and progress from provisional to full registration with the GMC
• the second year (F2) is designed to strengthen F1 competencies, achieve additional F2 competencies and develop wider experience in preparation for training in any specialty
• there are two major strands to competency development - clinical knowledge and skills, and the broader skills set out in the GMC publication 'Good Medical Practice'

The NYEC Foundation School is one of three foundation schools in the Yorkshire and the Humber Postgraduate Deanery

In the NYEC Foundation School:

• appointment through the national application process is for two years
• the F1 programmes are published on the UKFPO web site
• F2 programmes are selected by trainees from a list of complementary programmes through a collaborative matching process with no scores, no forms and no interviews!!  | more |
• all trainees spend each year in a different Trust
• all trainees spend one year in a teaching hospital and one year in a District General Hospital (DGH):
  Hull is the main teaching hospital
  Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Scarborough are DGHs
  For the purposes of Foundation Training, York is treated as both a teaching hospital and a DGH.  It is possible for some trainees to work in both York and Hull during their two years.
• all F1 programmes include medicine in general and surgery in general
• all F2 programmes aspire to provide one primary care post and one acute care post
• all trainees attend a mandatory generic skills programme tailored to meet the requirements of the foundation curriculum.  | more |
